Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) contains mucilage that swells when in contact with water, and then coat the membranes of internal organs and skin, bringing relief from irritation, ulceration and inflammation. They work perfectly on the throat and lower respiratory tract, as well as on the wall of the stomach and intestines. They are included in soluble fiber, and therefore have a positive effect on the regulation of bowel movements, as well as on the proper level of cholesterol and glucose in the blood.
Marshmallow has been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years. Hippocrates and Dioskurides mentioned it in ancient times as a herb that alleviates asthma symptoms and toothache, and finds external application after insect bites, as well as burns and skin irritations. In Polish folk medicine, marshmallow was called a forest or field mallow, mallow or zygmarek. It was used primarily for diseases of the respiratory system, as well as for gastric and intestinal ulcers, indigestion and diarrhea. Marshmallow was formerly not only a medicine, but also food for the ancient Egyptians, Syrians and Chinese. Its root and young leaves were eaten.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF MARSHMALLOW ROOT
- mucilage contained in marshmallow herb positively affects the lungs, bronchi and upper and lower respiratory tract. They coat and moisturize the respiratory tract. They dilute phlegm in lungs and bronchi and help remove it.
- They inhibit a dry, troublesome cough and soothe throat irritations.
- It also works well in the digestive tract - it covers the gastric and intestinal mucosa, soothes its irritation and ulceration. It also reduces stomach acidity.
- mucilage is a long chain polysaccharide molecule combined with uronic acids and proteins. They are not digested in the digestive tract, but they increase bowel movements and help regulate bowel movements, which is why they are included in soluble fiber.
- In addition, they have a positive effect on the development of healthy intestinal microflora.
- mucilage helps maintain normal cholesterol and blood glucose levels as they reduce their absorption in the digestive tract.
- Additionally, they suppress appetite, which is why it is a valuable addition to the diet of obese and overweight people.
- Mallow applied externally has a positive effect on the skin condition, moisturizes and softens it. It reduces redness and itching, brings relief from burns, accelerates healing of minor wounds.
- Soothes irritated eyes and genital and anal areas. It improves the condition of hair.
