Coltsfoot is a perennial from the Asteraceae family. Due to the characteristic shape of the leaves, it is also called a horse's foot or donkey's foot - they resemble hoof prints. Supports the work of the upper and lower respiratory tract. Substances contained in coltsfoot soothe inflammation, dilute residual secretion and trigger the expectorant reflex.
Latin name - Tussilago farfara.
How does coltsfoot work?
What makes coltsfoot help in getting rid of respiratory tract infections is primarily the presence of mucous substances and tannins. Thanks to them:
- has a disinfecting and astringent effect
- coats the mucous membranes with a protective layer, which reduces the feeling of scratching and dryness in the throat and facilitates expectoration
- soothes irritations
- relaxes smooth muscles
- Formerly, coltsfoot was also used topically to wash wounds and other skin ailments such as burns, ulcers and abscesses.
- It can also be helpful for lactating women, contributing to the regeneration of cracked nipples and reducing their pain, burning and itching.
When should you reach for coltsfoot?
Coltsfoot leaves collected in spring and summer are used to prepare a decoction. It will bring relief in coughs of various origins, upper respiratory tract infections, as well as asthma. It can also be used externally, in compresses for bruises and hematomas or for washing the skin.
It will work well in combination with other herbs - especially those that are also a source of coating and protective mucus and have antibacterial and antiviral properties. Therefore, coltsfoot properties may be even more effective, e.g. in combination with thyme, rosemary, chamomile.
Usage
Coltsfoot will be most effective in the form of a decoction. Put a teaspoon of leaves in a glass of hot water, boil for 3 minutes from the start of boiling, then let stand for 10 minutes and strain. Drink between meals 3-5 times a day for a maximum of 1/4 cup. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose, as it may have a negative effect on the liver.
Use
Decoction: 1 tablespoon of dried leaves pour a glass of water, then boil for about 3 minutes. The whole thing should be left for about 15 minutes and strained. Drink 2-3 times a day, between meals.our a glass of water, then boil for about 3 minutes. The whole thing should be left for about 15 minutes and strained. Drink 2-3 times a day, between meals.
